Title : Therapeutic uses of honey by the population of Beni Mellal-Khenifra region in Morocco

Abstract :

To investigate the therapeutic uses of honey by populations in five provinces of Beni Mellal-Khenifra region. The data was collected through interviews individuals using 400 questionnaires. Informations collected were analyzed by descriptive statistics. The X2 test assessed the links between the different types of data. Sphinx Plus2 software was used for data processing. 82% of the population surveyed used honey as a treatment for 42 symptoms or diseases. The most cited were respiratory diseases (52%), skin diseases (15.11%), and gastrointestinal disorders (14.66%). 4 % of respondents reported having side effect from using honey. The oral way (83.5%) was the principal administration way of product, followed by the local way (16.46%). The most used by survied population were Euphorbia honey (43%), Citrus honey (25%) and multiflower honey (16%). the sources of information on apitherapy were friends and family (56.06%), internet (23.12%), health professionals (11.56%), and Quran and Hadith (9.24%). Surveyed population showed interest towards honey use for diseases prevention and treatment purposes. Further scientific studies shoud also be conducted to standardize the therapeutic uses.
